Wire loom/ heat shield.


  • Wire loom/ heat shield.

    So i am installing my Stand alone system, and want to put some protection on all of the wiring. I have found the cheap wire loom split conduit crap, but that doesn't seem to do much for heat protection.

    I am looking for a wire loom or covering that will have good heat protection as I need to run a wire down the face of the engine block to my crank angle sensor mounted on the timing gear, and then to the stock cylinder head temp sensor location, Exhaust gas temp and wide band o2.

    Split loom would be great, but i could remove all the connectors to feed it if i must if the protection is very good. So anyone with any experience with a product it would be greatly appreciated. I have checked summit, jegs, ebay and amazon.

    The DEI stuff loooks great but the pricing is insane.

    cableties website is first place i checked but i didnt see the nomex stuff, and i was searching for the wrong stuff i was looking at WIRE LOOM and kept finding junk instead of using heat, sleeve and such keywords.

    Don't use cheap loom, if you split the loom and the loom stays open its really crappy. Gets some good loom and VERY good tape.

    I have a bunch of installer loom and they are good unless they are near exhaust areas. If its a short run use those Teflon wraps for spark plugs. If you want some 1/4 loom, I wouldn't mind sharing some.

    1/4 is primarily what i want im thinking 5-6 feet will get me out of the high temp areas where i can use regular wireloom. as stated CHTS, crank angle, o2, EGT are the primary concerns. currently biggest concern is the crank angle running up the engine block under the timming cover up along the injector harness. it is a small 4 wire plug, and being behind the timming cover it will certainly be heat soaked.

    I recently bought a shit-ton of Nylon split loom from McMaster-Carr to re-do the entire engine bays of my cars (1 down, 2 more to go)
    Beware of cheap vinyl shit you can hold to the light and see thru, it sucks. I bought some from Frys and ended up tossing it all.

    The heat reflective stuff works well. I'm using it to protect wire looms on a rack i built for work that uses large black anodized heat-sinks
    that absorb intense UV-light and get in excess of 180celsius. The radiated heat from these heat-sinks doesn't seem to degrade the reflective split-loom.
    I'm going to use some of it for my FI subharness.

    McMaster also carries other high temp braided stuff too.

    Z karma you the man that is exactly what I was looking for at a price i can afford! Kevlar abrasion and heat up to 650degrees only $1.29 a foot. Thanks everyone else for the suggestions as well. i found some good products, but i think this will be a good way to go. that ceramic looks nice at 1200degree and only 43.50 a foot. going to pick one or the other as soon as i measure the length for prices to do the entire harness.

    because the wires running to the crank angle sensor are just bare exposed 20guage wire with nothing on them they do read 60C tempature which is 140degrees farenheit but will be running down the face of the engine block to the timing gear. the wires are already thin look at the injector plug wires and you have an idea of the size. but at some point i removed the original sheathing or something happened so it is two bare wires that will be touching the engine block. Then with the o2, and EGT they are right on the exhaust so i figure if i can get 5 feet of material i can protect those three sensors which concern me. If i was overly concerned i would buy that DEI crap that is $20 for 3 feet. Plus you know i tend to over do shit. I dont really need 1600cc injectors but hey.

    The original idea was to get stainless steel sleeving so the wires match the hoses. but then i have to unpin/ repin everything big pain in the butt and SS isnt very heat resistant like nomex.
    The Z will be driven on a 16hour drive in november so it will see long hours of running temp.

    I forgot i live near one of the largest wiring manufactures in the country SOUTHWIRE so i drove over there and asked a guy standing by one of the bay doors, he handed me some grey stuff and said its like shrink wrap use that and some nylon cheapo stuff he said they use both sleeves in telecommunications wires, so i stuck it over the wires and then put some cheap corrugated pipe on it. whola good enough for my crank angle sensor for sure.
