R200 open vs CLSD

  • R200 open vs CLSD

Can anyone tell me what the visual differences are to the R200 open diff vs CLSD? I'm not 100% confident the diff on my Aus-spec 1988 Z31 ever was a CLSD from the factory. We've just done the test on the hoist and only one wheel turns at a time so if it IS a CLSD then it's toast. But before we rip it open I want to make sure it's serviceable before I find out it's an open diff and have nothing to replace it with.

I know some have the finned diff cover but is there any other identifying factors to determine if the R200 in my car was a CLSD or open?

    Cheers

It is most likely open. I think only JDM and USDM cars got LSDs. Australian cars are also covered in the same FSMs as Euro cars and there are no LSDs mentioned anywhere. They had diff coolers but all had open diffs. If you want one, get one of those aftermarket S13 LSD units meant for originally open diffs.

Kaaz S13 units are numbered as SAN2655 and SBN2655 for 2 way and 1.5 way.

Cheers mate, good information. I had suspected we got stiffed on this. I only bothered noticing because my inside rear RHS tyre is more worn than the other, not because of any mechanical issues.

The price for the Kaaz 1.5 way landed is $2,000aud! Damn. Lol

Surely there's an aftermarket option like cusco that'll go with the open diff housing and half shafts etc?

yes, they have options to fit as well

Quaife, Cusco, OS Giken, and maybe someone else. As far as you can read online, any insert that fits an originally open S13 R200 should also fit an open Z31 R200. Verify that before you order anything, though.

You should be able to pick up a good used clutch type OE complete long nose diff for around 1,200.00 pacific pesos Try AU Ebay or http://www.viczcar.com/forum/forum/2…ools-for-sale/

Yeah I see a few Skyline parts kicking around, the information around fitment and compatibility is very obscure though.

This is only 30 min from me; http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/1…clsd-4375-qld/

Do not want that ratio though and I also don't want to be the first to do a Skyline diff conversion lol

I'll be going through a similar mix and match soon, 260Z open diff to get the ratio required, the '87 turbo Z31 axles slip straight in, not sure if a short nose helical LSD centre will fit but that's the idea.

Can't you just combine a suitable final drive gear and differential to get the ratio you want?

Don't see that many crownwheel and pinion sets for sale Kaur, most people want to sell the complete diff.

Just few cents: all jdm z31 diffs, excluding vlsd are "bald".

A few people have been saying they've found LSDs in their 300ZX Z31 (AUDM). They came with certain turbo models.
