VG30E with HX35W questions?

  • VG30E with HX35W questions?

Hi! This is my first post on Z31Performance.

I'm looking to upgrade my VG30E (1986 N/A) to have a Holset HX35W w/ Nistune ECU. Any recommendations? Is this a good idea?
Hoping to up my hp to 250-300 at least.

    Here's a picture of my Z31 currently:

A Holset HX35W and Nistune has proven to be a decent combination. Obviously you'll need more fuel and other mods to support that setup but it's been done and reliably.

Admittedly the search function on this site isn't the greatest so it's easier to use Google to search the site for info.

What kind of fuel mods are we talking?
And how much for your HX35? haha

HX35 have really fallen out of fashion. It used to be a great choice when turbos were a lot more expensive. You better off getting a BW S257 for those power goals. That 250 -300 should be obtainable with fuel upgrades and a inter-cooler.

So you don't think that a HX35 would make 250-300?
Do you still think that Nistune would be good for the BW S257 then?

Even the Garret GT3076R has fallen in price. Only about 1G now and might work well if you want to keep the AC.

lol my bad. I remember paying $350-400 for a blown HX35 like ten years ago then doing HX40 compressor swap and a rebuild. Putting the turbo setup much closer to not $1k Not factoring in inflation. But Holset's do have the distinct whistle sound that never gets old.

Improved to the point that you'd trust one on a $3K engine build?

Maybe. I've got a stock M30 VG30 mileage unknown motor that i have contemplated throwing on a Ebay GT35. I paid under 200 for the motor and it's been parked beneath my bench for years now. A VG33ET is something i'd put a better turbo on.

I wouldn't on a proper engine build. But on a stock block I think the risk is worth it.

Mad Matt from youtube put an Ebay-T70 on his 86 to save $$$ and he never mentioned any problems. But I still wouldn't take the risk on even a 250 HP Z. That's just me though.

I agree honestly, I'd rather spend a bit more and have something safe, fast and reliable.
