Re-shelling an 84 model into an 89 shell

Anyone know if its been done. Basically I've got a UK early 84 2 door targa model which has rotten sills but the engine etc is sweet. I was going to weld it but have been offered at 89 shell that was an auto. The mechanics should be the same but what about the engine electrics etc, are the plugs and connectors the same ?

Most of the wiring is interchangable, even if it doesn't work out you can use the wiring from the 84.
