intermitant starting problem on '87ZXT

  • intermitant starting problem on '87ZXT

I have a odd problem on my Z. When I press in the clutch, the car sometimes will not fire. It seems to be occurring more often. I sanded off the rust-covered plate behind the peddle, but this did not help. On my older Z's of this era, all one had to do was replace the plastic button that was the contact point. This year does not have the button. I can hear a slight clicking noise when it decides to act up and not fire. HELP! I do not want tp get stranded somewhere when it quits completely- if ever. Thanks for your help.

There should be a switch that does not allow the car to start without pressing the clutch. You can replace or fix it or simply bypass the swtch.

Sounds good. What does the switch look like and where is it located. I did not see any switch around the peddle area when I checked there several days ago. Thanks, Ralph

It's pretty easy to replace the switch. Well, most difficult thing is bending your back so you can reach up along the firewall. The switch should be on a bracket that the clutch pedal rests on. The pedal arm should have a clear or green rubber bumper on it. If you don't have it they should be available at any Nissan dealer in stock because a lot of Nissan's used these over the years. I think this is the switch but again I did my cruise control, not clutch, and searching for neutral safety switch only shows one for an A/T. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ECHSL903 Here's the FSM: http://xenonzcar.com/z31/FSM/1987/CL.php look at page 3.
